Lieutenant Murphy received his Captaincy in Dec. 1914, and proceeded to the front with the 1st Canadian Contingent.
He served throughout the severe fighting of 1915 and 1916 when he was severely wounded, and after recuperating in England returned to Canada on furlough for Christmas 1916.
Returning to the front at the expiration of his leave he took part in the great attack at Vimy Ridge, being again wounded but remained on duty.
During severe fighting near Lens, Aug. 16, 1917, he fell in action.
He had been granted his Majority in the previous April and also was awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during the operations culminating in the capture of Arleux village, Apr. 20. 1917.
