Lieut Muckle spent three years with the 24th Kent Regiment, Chatham; later nearly three years with the 21st at Windsor before going to Kingston, Queens University.
He enlisted in the 14th Regiment at Kingston later transferring to the 38th battalion, Ottawa.
John proceeded overseas with the 38th Bn. He served with the 38th Bn. 15/02/15 to May 1916 TOS. Reported KIA 15/01/17 – Rouen, France. General HQ. 20/01/17. Estate Registry 22/02/17, CEF – London, ON.

From the Toronto Star 22/01/17 News clipping: London Ont. 22/01/17. Lieut. J. E. Muckle was killed in Action in France, His mother was officially advised to-day.
In 1914 he was attending Queen’s University preparing to become a Presbyterian minister. He enlisted with the 38th Battalion at Ottawa. In a recent letter he told of going out with a party with the red Cross flag to bury British and German dead and being fired on by German snipers.
