Pte. Frank Mowatt served three years with the 4th Gordon Highlanders, Scotland.

Pte. Frank Mowatt embarked with the 186th Battalion on the Lapland, arriving at Bramshott Camp April 9th, 1917. He crossed to France September 3rd, transferring to the 18th Battalion. November 10th, 1917, at Passchendaele, Pte. Mowatt received shrapnel wound in the left foot and also was gassed, returning to England November 18th. He was admitted to Ford Military Hospital, and December 20th to the 4th Canadian General Hospital, Basingstoke. After convalescence he was place on the Post Office staff at Basingstoke, being unable to return for active service.

From: Proceeding of a Medical Board: Man of apparent age stated. Well developed and well nourished.

Examination: – Great Toe – Left Foot shows wound of shrapnel. Nail cut two and turned up. Movement in joints of toe fair – 2nd toe overlap great and third toe. Other systems normal Subjective, symptoms – pain under toe and around joint of Great toe and up dorsum boot swells on walking and gets blue and black with special boot and can walk comfortably at his own gait 

Overseas Service : 4 Mths. with 18th Batt. S.W. TOE LEFT FOOT – 11/19/17 at Paschendael.     

The Tilbury Times, Thursday, 29 November, 1917 reported:

“Three Tilburyites Reported Killed and Wounded.”

“Word was received here last week of the following local casualties at the front. Frank Mowatt, who formerly worked at the Tilbury Tile Plant and who enlisted here and left for the front with the 186th. His brother also attached to the 186th was reported wounded some time ago.”

Others mentioned were Ben Faubert WIA and John Tulley KIA 3/11/17.All three were in action in the battle for Passchendaele.
