Date of Birth: 08/10/1896, in Raleigh Twsp., Kent Co., ON. The son of Thomas and Anne Mott of R. R. #5 Merlin, ON. A single farmer living at his father’s farm. MSA 416802 AR. Attestation: 3/01/18 at London, ON. to 1st WOR. IODE(P), next of kin originally his father but changed to his wife Emily living at 31 Foster St., Chatham who was receiving $15.00/month. It was this address William returned to after the war.
Completed his Medical 11/11/17 at Chatham, ON. Classified as A II. Age 21 years 3 mos., Height: 5’ ¾”, Complexion: Dark, Eyes: Blue, Hair: Brown, Vision 20/20. Mole on Right Shoulder.
Pte. William Thomas Mott trained in London, Ontario, until the latter part of January, arriving in England February 15th, 1918. He was stationed at Bramshott.
William was serving with the 31st Bn. Alberta Regt. when he was awarded the Military Medal, the citation as follows:

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty at ROSIERES on the morning of August 9th , 1918:-
William departed for England aboard the S. S. Grampian which departed Halifax, NS. 2/02/18. He arrived in England 16/02/18.
This man showed exceptional bravery under intense machine gun and shell fire. Noticing his platoon being held up by a party of the enemy armed with automatic rifles, with utter disregard to danger rushed ahead, killing two of the enemy and capturing the rest.
This man has at all times shown great courage under fire, and his conduct has been a fine example to the other men of his platoon.
After a brief stay in England he departed overseas to France with the 18th Batt. – CEF. He arrived at the Cdn. Relief Camp 22/05/18, TOS. With the 4th Cdn Reserves. 6/06/18 to the C.C.R.C. and was TOS with the 31st Batt. 15/06/18.
William was promoted to L/Cp. 22/09/18 and then Corporal 30/10/18. He did warrant a Christmas leave from the 15th to the 29th of December, 1918 in England.
Cpl. Mott proceeded to England 11/04/1919 arriving at Witly Camp 14/04/1919 with the Manitoba Regt. 10/10/18. He was Struck Off Strength 13/05/19 and was discharged with the 1st WOR.
Note: – What follows was found in his pay book:
21st reserve Batt: Alberta at Bramshott – England. Transferred to the 31st Batt. His pay was $1.20/day.
