Resident Wallaceburg

Of Wallaceburg, ON. The son of Elmer Humble Morse of Leamington, ON and Josephine (nee Lowes) of Coatsworth, ON., Robert Claude was born 14/07/1984 in Blenheim, ON.

In 1900 the family settled in Wallaceburg, ON. [Reported to be serving in RFC or RAF – Found in “No Return Ticket” – A. Mann.] Claude attended both elementary and highschool in Wallaceburg as well as being involved in hockey, football, baseball and lacrosse.

In 1915 Claude joined the Imperial Army serving in the Transportation Division as a Driver serving in France 16/06/1916. He served until the wars end and then returned to Wallaceburg 30/05/1919.

He was employed at the Dominion Glass company in Wallaceburg from 1919 to 1924 when he moved to Detroit to work for the Ford Motor Co. until 1925. He married Edna R. Sherman, the daughter of john and Margaret Sherman of Kent Bridge on 20/08/1925, then moving to Pontiac, Michigan from 1926 to 1929 and became the assistant manager at a lumber company. While living in Pontiac Edna and Claude had their first child Robert Sherman, born 28/07/1927 who was born in Chatam, ON. A second son Douglas Richard was born 10/06/1930. After the birth of their second son the family moved to Exeter, ON. joining his Edgerton Clayton and sister Mally Frances where living. Malley’s husband David Gordon owned the Exeter Lumber Mill from 1930 to 35, it while they were in Exeter that a daughter Marilyn Ruene (Mrs. William Lester) was born 6/12/1933.

Claude and family moved back to Chatham, ON in 1935 where he worked as a salesman for the Dodge dealer and at International Harvester. In 1946 Claude began his own business “Claude Morse Motors” at the Texaco service Station on St. Clais street in 1946 selling used cars and Federal Trucks. He would later build his own station at 625 St.Clair St. in Chatham selling truck hoists and bodies for Woods Industries of Windsor, ON.

Besides his family and friends and business Claude was involved in the Lions Club of Chatham, a member of the Phinx Masonic Lodge in Wallaceburg, the Scottish Rite and became a Shriner. He was also an adherent at St. Andrews United Church in Chatham.

Claude passed away 2 September, 1986.
