The only son of Ralph Morris of Tilbury West, ON.

Robert enlisted 29 January 1942 after finishing a course at the Comber High School. At the time Bob was working on his father’s farm in Tilbury West township.

He received his military training at Chatham No.12 BTC, Camp Borden and Meaford. At Meaford he was a gunnery instruction for several months. Robert was to go overseas in August of 1942, burt an emergency appendectomy intervene. Once he had recoverd he went to Meaford, ON. to help build a firing-range and then mad a firing instructor to do firing instructions until October 1943 when he “went across”.

Robert went to France with the Duke of York Royal Canadian Hussars on 13/06/44.

Trooper Morris was wounded six times in the engagement at the Eu a Nazl. As a gunner in an armoured car Robert was struck twice in the head, three times in the arm and once in the hand. Despite these wounds he remained at his post, until his commanding officer ordered him down

The CDN 15/12/44 in an article “Tpr. Morris awarded M.M.” provided more details on the action ear Dieppe, France on 2 September 1944. His sister Irene Morris provides the following:

“He (Robert) was told that a number of Germans were wanting to surrender. He went out to get them. Instead of surrendering they started to fight. One of them threw a grenade which exploded about six inches from Bob’s head. Before passing out Bob machine-gunned the thrower of the missle and a couple of his companions. He was taken to an English hospital where it was found the he had shrapnel in his hand and head and ear-drum broken – all on the left side. The broken ear-drum left him temporarily deafened.”

As a result of his wound Robert was sent to recuperate at No.1 Canadian Armoured Corps – Reserve Unit.

It was reported that Robert would receive his Military Medal at Buckingham Palace by King George VI. CDN 6/02/45.

Reported to have received the Military Medal for “courage and outstanding bravery in the face of the enemy. Rita Lobzun Collection. Arrived in Chatham from overseas duty 8 August, 1945. CDN 8/08/45.
