Robert enlisted in January 1942. He received his military training at Chatham, Camp Borden and Meaford. At Meaford he was a gunnery instructor for several months. Robert went overseas in September of 1943.

Trooper Morris was wounded six times in the engagement at the Eu a Nazl. As a gunner in an armoured car Robert was struck twice in the head, three times in the arm and once in the hand. Despite these wounds he remained at his post, until his commanding officer ordered him down.

It was reported that Robert would receive his Military Medal at Buckingham Palace by King George VI. CDN 6/02/45.
