“Letters from the Front”
The following letter has been received by Mrs. W. H. Morris from a Lieutenant of the late Pte. Ray Morris’ platoon.
France, 11 May, 1917
Dear Mrs. Morris,
As officer in charge of the platoon in which your son, Pte. Ray Morris belonged, it is my sad duty to notify you of the sad facts of his death.
First let me convey to you the heartfelt sympathies of the officers and men of No.3 Company. Ray was a mighty fine soldier and comrade. He was well liked by his chums and was such an example that he was given charge of a section of riflemen.
On April 9th he bravely led his section over the top but unfortunately was severely wounded in the chest before he had gone far by being hit with a piece of shrapnel. One of my men saw him outside a dressing station waiting his turn to go down the line. This was after the wound was dressed. He said he felt fine and seemed most cheery. On April 11th he died of wounds in a hospital down the line and was most likely buried at the same place as is the custom.
His personal effects are being forwarded to you through the proper channels. Any further details you wish to know I shall be pleased to supply if you wish.
Please accept my deep and sincere sympathy in your great loss.
Yours sincerely,
Harold S. Wilson, Lieut.
P.S. With heartfelt thanks, I am Major W. H. Keeslick
Co. O Company
20th Canadians.
