Private “Jack’ of 144 Queen Street, was one of the first Chatham soldiers to leave Chatham at the ‘outbreak of war in August 1914, three days after the war was officially declared. Trained in England and went to France where he has been there for three years
He was away for three yeas overseas on furlough He was a member of the Emergency Squad of the Army Medical Corps.
He left the city in August 17, 1914 after three week before enlistment. He went into training in England and as went to France. He has gone through the “Big Shows” – Ypres, Courcelette and the Somme and Vimy Ridge. He was granted a ten furlough. He had escaped without any wounds, he was on a ten day furlough in the city.
