Resident Thamesville

Reference: RG 150, Accession 1992-93/166, Box 6269 – 27 Date of Birth 18/11/1894.  The son of Wilbert John and Mary Janet (nee Bentley) Mitton. Born on the family farm two miles west of Thamesville, ON. A single farmer living in Thamesville. Attestation: 24/03/1916 to No.2 CFA.

Russell served as an ambulance driver in the Canadian Siberian Expeditionary Force. It is reported that he was awarded a medal for bravery “in the performance of his duties under fire.”

After his discharge from the Army he returned to Thamesville and with his fater-in-law William McKenzie started a large poultry farm and hatchery north of Jane St. in Thamesville. After losses from a fire and a depression conditions he terminated that business and moved to Rossland, British Columbia to prospect for gold which he had some success at.

Russell returned to Ontario and drove a fuel delivery truck for the White Rose Oil Company in the Windsor area. For a period of time he worked for the Ontario Department of Highways. Following the death of his first wife Gladys on 20 December, 1943 Russell operated a clothing store in Thamesville. He would later remarry Florence (nee Brown), they moved to Tilbury and operated a ladies wear store.

Russell passed away 20 April, 1965 his wife, affectionately known as “Brownie”, passed away 15 January, 1972 and both are buried in the Stewart Cemetery, Tilbury, ON.
