Regimental number(s): 279277 / 911516. Reference: RG 150, Accession 1992-93/166, Box 6218 – 21,Item: 184324, PDF:-B6218-SO21. Date of Birth: 31/07/1897 or 31/07/1899 in Wheatley, ON., son of Aldolphus & Mrs. A. Mills of 10333 81st Ave., Edmonton, Alberta.

The family had moved to Edmonton in 1907. Born in Wheatley, Kent Co. ON.  A single college student living at his father’s home. Attestation: 14/03/1916 / 13/09/1916 at Edmonton, AL. It appears that he might have used the wrong birth date in March of 1916 and re-enlists 13/09/1916 with the 196th Bn. as service # 911516, age 19 with which he went overseas 

Age: 19 years, Height: 5’ 8 ½”, Girth: 35″, Complexion: Dark, Eyes: Grey, Hair: Brown. Medical: ‘Fit” 14/03/16 at Edmonton – reported a defective right eye. He was attending college? At Edmonton 1/10/16.   

It was during the actions beginning on 27 September, 1918 that all four divisions of the Canadian Corps attacked the Germans defending the area around Canal du Nord opening the road to Cambrai and eventually to Mons. During this action six Canadians won Victorai Crosses but the toll of killed and wounded was high including 19 year old Pte. Orla Mills.

Sailed from Halifax, NS. aboard the S.S. Southland 31/10/16 with the 218th Bn. Arrived in England at Liverpool. Posted to the 15th Bn. at Bramshott 14/10/17. Processed O/S. for service with the 19th Bn.

Mrs. A. Mills, 10333-81St. Ave. SO. Edmonton, Alta. Received the Memorial Cross. Adolphus Mills received the Memorial Plaque 28/04/1921 and the Memorial Scroll 18/01/1922. His “WILL” went to his mother Mrs. A. Mills 5/10/16.
