Saw service in England, Sicily, Italy, France, Belgium, and Holland.
He enlisted in May of 1940 going overseas on 12 December of that year, while the German ‘blitzkrieg’ was sweeping through the Low Countries and France. He was rapidly promoted to lance corporal, corporal, sgt and finally S/Sgt. in the RCEME. He was with the first forces landing in Sicily “Operation Husky” 10 July, 1943. Serving with the 8th Army in Italy 9 Sept. 43 until being transferred to the forces fighting in Holland in 1944.
Reported arriving at Halifax, NS. aboard the S. S. “Nieu Amsterdam”, 9 Sept., 1945. Expected to arrive at Lachine, PQ on the 11th for leave to return to their homes. CDN 10/09/45. Reported being welcomed back to Chatham from overseas duty by Aldermen George Kerr KC., A. G. Goodman and Bert Joyce also by Rehabilitation Officer William Foreman and Alex Copeland for the Civil Reception Committee along with hundreds of citizens. CDN 12/09/45. Having been met in London by his wife he would meet his son Peter, of four years and four months as he stepped from the C.P.R. train at 1:08 p.m in Chatham. CDN14/09/45.
