“After enlisting [Dusty] in Galt, Ontario, he trained in St. Thomas for about a year before being posted overseas to England. He was posted to a Canadian squadron of Bristol Beaufighters at an airfield near Newcastle.
He generally worked as ground crew but on occasion served as an ‘Observer’. Asked if he every went up on operations he said that he did, “it was an assignment to do what was required for a particular kind of operation or due to weather conditions”. He said, “you would watch the skyline and if you saw enemy aircraft your would say “Four bandits at four o’clock.” It would then be up to the pilot.
It was difficult when a crew went “Missing in Action”, they could be shot down, lost, bailed out, killed or POW’s. you got to know some of the ground crew and the the aircrew of the planes you worked on. “You want to go on leave with a fellow next September and if he’s there and you go and that fine. But if not, you didn’t dwell over it those were the facts.”
