The son of Mr. and Mrs. John Michiels, 203 Queen St. Wallaceburg; the brother of P/O Ernie and sister Dorothy.. Born in Beveren-Wass, East Flanders, Belgium. He came to Canada in 1926 at the age of three. He received his education at Our Lady of Help separate school and Merici High School and Wallaceburg High School. He would later take a preparatory course at the University of Montreal. He also was employed at the Dominion Glass Co. before enlisting.

Emile enlisted 4 Nov., 1942 and trained at Lachine PQ., Toronto, Paulson, MB. The WN 16/03/44(P) reported that Emile received his commission as a Pilot Officer at Winnipeg, MB. He was on furlough until he had to report at Calgary AB. for further training.
