The son of Mrs. James McMullen of Thames St., Chatham, ON. Training in London, ON., James had a week-end leave to visit his family in October, 1942. CDN 5/10/42.

The son of Mrs. Ursula and James McMullen  (a veteran of WWI) living at 235 Thames St., Chatham, ON. Pte. McMullen had four brothers and five sisters. His brother Bob was also in the Army and was overseas.  James was a former News carrier boy. He attended Blessed Sacrament School and the Chatham Vocational School.

James enlisted with the First Kents 6 August, 1940 at the age of 17 years Training in London, ON., James had a weekend leave to visit his family in October, 1942. CDN 5/10/42. It was reported that he went overseas in March. He was in service in North Africa in July. 

The CDN 31/03/43(P) reported that Pt. J. T. McMullen had arrived safely overseas according a cablegram. 

It was reported in the CDN 20/10/43(P) that Pte. McMullen had been wounded in action in Italy on 7/10/43, details were not available. James was the first Chatham casualty from the Italian campaign. He was 20 years of age on 15 February. Details of his injury were not then available.

Transferred to another unit and went overseas and was attached to the 1st Canadian Base Reinforcement Division  and served in Central Mediterranean Area. Transferred to the #2 C.A.C.R.U. and served in Continental Europe. Received the 1939 to 1945 Star, The Italy Star, and the France and Germany Star, and the C.V.S.M. with Clasp.

The CDN 28/12/45(P) reported that Tpr. McMullen was aboard the S.S. Queen Elizabeth was expected to be in New York on the 28th and was expected to be in Chatham on the 29th.

Discharged May 17th, 1946.
