Son of Angus and Mary Louise ‘Minnie’ (nee Richardson) McMillan, who moved to Blenheim shortly after William’s birth, he had a brother Edward B.. William attended public school at Samson’s SS #17 in Harwich Twsp., then the Blenheim Continuation School and finally Chatham Collegiate Institute. After graduation from CCI he taught a year of public school in Prince Edward County, ON. Attending Queen’s University he took Arts and Medicine obtaining his BA. In 1914 and his MD. CM .in 1916, winning a gold medal in medicine and surgery.
William had taken military training in his final year at Queens and enlisted with the CAMC, Attestation: 27/05/1916 at Kingston, ON. He sailed for overseas leaving Halifax, NS. 1/06/16 on the S. S. Olympic he disembarked at Liverpool, England 7/06/16. After arriving in England, Gazetted Captain 11/07/16, he trained at Peraker Camp, Folkstone. From there it was to France with No. 7 Canadian General Hospital (Queen’s) first at Le Treport as the registar for eight months, then moving with No. 7 to Estaples 16/11/16 where he stayed (other than a three month posting with the British No. 16 Casualty Clearing Station) serving as radiologist for six months and the remainder doing general surgery and medicine.
Being a doctor was no protection from illness and Captain McMillan had a having Influenza in February and the Mumps while at No.24 General Hospital – Estaples and the Mumps returned in April 1917. He also had poor vision due to Myopia and as such was not fit for “general service”. He was reassigned to Garrison Duty at Witley Camp, Surrey, England 13/06/1919.
Prior to demobilization he had served in England and France. He was stationed at CAMC Training School Dibgate. 7th. Canadian General Hospital as Paymaster, 3rd Convalescent Depot and the CAMC – Casualty Coy. and Witley.
He left France with No. 7 for Camp Witley 1/06/1919 where they stayed for a month. He returned to Canada aboard the Empress of Britain embarking 3/07/1919 arriving in Quebec City 12/07/1919. He was discharged from the army at Kingston 14/07/1919.
Discharged at Kingston with the rank of Captain July 14th 1919 due to demobilization.
Dr. McMillan did his post graduate work in New York City, then settled in Thorold, ON. In July of 1921 he married Mary A. (nee Fraser) and they had two sons Donald A. and William A. (Donald would become a doctor). Dr. McMillan served as a MP for Welland from 1950 to 1965 when he retired.
Dr. McMillan passed away 8 September, 1974. William George McMillan – grandson.
