Private Michael J. McGarvin left for overseas with the 173rd Battalion in November 1916, arriving in England November 20th, 1916. He proceeded to France, transferring to the Canadian Forestry Corps where he received promotion to Corporal, Sergeant, Staff Sergeant, Quartermaster Sergeant, and was granted a commission as Lieutenant August 6th, 1918. He served continuously until the Armistice was signed, returning to Canada in November 1918.
Lieutenant Michael J. McGarvin received his discharge December 16th, 1918, due to demobilization.
