Born in Wallaceburg, ON. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles McGaffey of Bruce St., Wallaceburg.   Bob attended D. A. Gordon School and Wallaceburg High School. He was employed at the Wallaceburg Brass Ltd. as a foreman. He was a member of the Kinsmen and St. John Ambulance Association. Husband of Helen (nee Hamilton) father of Bobby 5 and Elaine 3, the family was living at 61 King St., Wallaceburg. Helen, beside being a mother of two children was also a Linotype operator for the Wallaceburg News

The WN 16/03/44(P) reported Sgt. McGaffey has arrived overseas, one year after his enlistment 26 November.   

The WN (date unknown) reported Robert McGaffey had received his commission as Pilot Officer. His dad completed one-half of a tour of operational flights. He had flown missions over Germany, Holland, Belgium France and the Coastal Islands. During a raid over the Ruhr Valley (aka “Happy Valley”) recently he said, “the flak was so thick “you could get out and walk on it.” The plane just ahead of him was blown to bits.

He was on a mission to bomb Keil, Germany 16 September as part of a 1,000 bomber raid. His first bombing mission had been an attack on the the French city of Caen the fay before the Canadians captured it.
