The son of Frank and Margaret McDuffe, brother of Donald, 5th Cdn. Medical Regt. F/O. Air Medal – 1th USAAF.(Award effective 27/08/43. “Canada Gazette”, 4/05/46 and AFRO 473/46 – 10/05/46) Promoted to Flt. Lieut. (J11967). He flew P-40s in Alaska with 14 Sqd. and 111 Sqd. – RCAF.
David flew Spitfires in Europe with 442 Sqd. RCAF. Shot down over France and captured on 20/08/1944, managed to escape a few days later and regained our lines.
Flying Officer McDuffe trained as a fighter pilot, and after commission, was among the Royal Canadian Air Force. Squadrons posted to Alaska and temporarily attached to the United States Air Forces, against possible Japanese invasion of Aleutian Islands. Later, accompanied his squadron to Germany. Shot down over occupied France after start of second front and after brief time “underground” was liberated by Canadian Forces. He was injured in crash, and returned home to Canada, but remained on active service with the Royal Canadian Air Force, and posted to Sea Island, British Columbia For his successful operations as fighter pilot over France and Germany, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Discharged on February 1946.
