The son of Mrs. Louise McCart of 196 Raleigh St., Chatham, ON. Married to Mrs. Gladys Mae, McCart and father of a daughter also living at 196 Raleigh St., Chatham, ON. Lawrence was also the brother of five sisters.
Lawrence enlisted with the First Kent’s in August of 1940 as a member of “A” company and went overseas on a draft of replacements in February of 1943. The CDN 1/03/43 reported that Mrs. McCart received word that her son Pte. McCart had arrived overseas.
Went overseas in January 1943 after transferring to the Loyal Edmonton Regiment. Saw active service in Italy and was wounded at Ortons, in December of 1943.
The family received a letter from the wounded soldier in a base hospital behind the lines in Italy. CDN 3/02/44 Pte. McCart was reported “seriously wounded” in the CDN 7/02/44.
Reported arriving at Halifax, NS. aboard the S. S. “Nieu Amsterdam”, 9 Sept., 1945. Expected to arrive at Lachine, PQ on the 11th for leave to return to their homes. CDN 10/09/45. Arrived home 11 Sep. 1945. CDN11/09/45(P). Reported being welcomed back to Chatham from overseas duty by Aldermen George Kerr KC., A. G. Goodman and Bert Joyce also by Rehabilitation Officer William Foreman and Alex Copeland for the Civil Reception Committee along with hundreds of citizens. CDN 12/09/45.
Discharged November 22nd, 1945.
Lawrence passed away 14 March, 1997.
