While on a 21 day leave from his Navy duties Roy had an “annoying experience” while walking on Queen Street in Chatham. He was stopped and questioned by a police officer after a woman had seen a Nazi spy or an escaped German POW.

When Roy produced his identification card  the officer was satisfied and apologized for the annoyance. This was all due to Roy taking his uniform to the cleaners the day before and that Roy had adopted an old Navy tradition of growing a beard after he joined the RCNVR in July of 1942. He was rather proud of his beard, although he admitted that it did change his appearance.
