Son of Sydney and Margaret Markham of Dresden, ON. A military wedding was held in Dresden 23/08/39 between Cpl. Robert Markham and Margret “Peggy” (nee Sayers).
The CDN 12/01/44 reported that Sgt. Robert Markham had been wounded on 24/12/43 in action with the Canadian Army in Italy. His parents had been notified of his wounding. It was well known that the 8th Army and the Canadians at Ortona. At the time there were at least two Wallaceburg men that were reported KIA.
The telegram received by his parents is as follows:
“Sincerely regret to inform you A3101 Sergeant Robert Ronald Markham officially reported wounded in action 24th December 1943. Nature and extent of wounds not yet available. Further information follows when received.
Director of Records.
Returning on the Duchess of Bedford”, expected to arrive at Halifax, NS.
9 September, 1945. Reported being welcomed back to Chatham from overseas duty by Aldermen George Kerr KC., A. G. Goodman and Bert Joyce also by Rehabilitation Officer William Foreman and Alex Copeland for the Civil Reception Committee along with hundreds of citizens. CDN 12/09/45.
Discharged October 1945.
