Private Mardling went overseas with the 1st Contingent Sept. 29, 1914, training on Salisbury Plains until Feb. 1915,, when he crossed to France with the 1st Canadian battalion.

He served with this unit until June 15, 1915 when he was killed in action at Givenchy.
