Son of Mr. and Mrs. Deo Marchand of Young St., Tilbury, ON., brother of Garard and Raymond also in service. Prior to the war he was employed at the Canadian Top and Body Company. TT 14/01/43.
Maurice enlisted in January 1942 to the Fort Garry Horse and went overseas in September.
He arrived in England in September of 1942
Maurice enlisted in January 1942 and went overseas and arrived in England in September, he was among the first units to go to Normandy. A veteran of actions in France, Belgium and Holland, he was reported wounded in April, 1945. Prior to the war he was employed at the Canadian Top and Body Company. TT 14/01/43. The CDN 25/09/43(P), reported that his parents had received a cable that their son had arrived safely overseas.
His parents had recently received a letter written 1 Feb. 1945 saying he had been to a show the evening before, which was the first outing in months.
He was among the first units to go to Normandy. A veteran of actions in France, Belgium and Holland. He was reported wounded in Holland, reported in the CDN 21/02/45, the nature and extent of his wounds the nature of the wounds would be reported at a later date. April, 1945
In July of 2014 Maurice was presented with the Order of the Legion of Honour by the French Government. (See Tilbury Times 19/08/2014).
A letter from Dennis Marchand of Belle River, ON. appeared in the Tilbury Times [date unknown] in reference to the funeral of Maurice on 30 April, 2016. “It was a class act to see officers out of their car saluting as Second World War veteran Maurice Marchand’s procession drove by. I’m sure Mr. Marchand would have been proud and moved by this.”
In July of 2014 Mr. Marchand received the Order of the Legion of France and is a Knight of the National Order of Legion of Honour. TT 19/08/2014.
