Pte. Frederic W. Makins was promoted to Sergeant and also passed as Musketry Instructor before leaving Canada with the 186th Battalion in March 1917. He trained at Bramshott and reverted to Private to cross to France with the first draft in June 1917. He transferred to the 18th Battalion, and three months later received wounds in the left leg. He was admitted to Hospital in England August 1917, (near Shrewsbury) on Dec 2nd he was transferred to Buxton and was discharged to W.O.R.D. March 30th 1918 pending return to Canada but circumstances interfering was held in England for Base Duty, was transferred from Infantry to C.A.M.C.
