It was reported that Pte. Makey was wounded in action while serving in western Europe. BNT 27/09/43.
A letter from Pte. Makey was printed in the BNT 24/01/1945 as follows:
Well Leonard how are you getting along? I hope you are O. The last time I saw you I didn’t know where I was going I was at Debert N.S. then. Wel within two weeks I was in England and in about fifteen days more I was in France near Falaise, (yes it was quite warm there). I continued on through France and am now over here in Holland.
Most of the people think we are just – OK and glad to see us,but some are just trying to make us think they are OK. I must be careful not to say too much as security is a big thing here.
Well leonard I have seen the ravages of war and I know what restruction and suffering it causes. The people here are lucky to have a roof over their heads. The Germans took just about everything they could move.
Well, I won’t try to say too much and take up so much of your time, as I’m sure you hearfrom a lot of the boys all over Europe as well as U.K.
I finally got in touch with my old friend Ernie Stover thank to you and the News-Tribune.
Well Leonard I guess I am kind of late with the old custom of wishing you the Best of Season’s Greetings, but I guess it’s better late than never.
I’m sorry I was not in England long enough to look up some of the boys. I was there but way up in Yorkshire, near Barnsley.
Well Leonard, I think I better sign off now. Here’s hoping to see you in the near future.
I remain your friend.
