The son of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Lumley of Tilbury. He signed up with the RCNVR in 1942 and reported in January of 1943. After enlisting some months prior Bill was called up to report to HMCS Hunter in Windsor, ON. TT 18/03/43. In late September Bill was stationed at the Navy training school at St. Hyacinthe, Quebec. Bill had a weekend home in August from the St. Hyacinthe Training Centre in August 1943. TT5/08/43. He was given a two week leave from St. Hyacinthe to visit his parents. TT 30/09/43.

“I was sent to Halifax an there he received more training and drafted aboard HMCS Nappanee, a Corvette where he received more training, trials and evolutions, then sent with C-3, which was to guard convoys crossing the Atlantic from Halifax to Londonderry.

A year 1944 – 45 He was with W-2 which was on convoy duty this side of the Atlantic in the areas of Halifax – St. Johns NFLD. and New York, USA.   

14 January, 1945 in Halifax getting the direction finder repaired when a report was received of the sinking of three ships within 10 miles of Halifax by a sub. We were sent to investigate, accompanied with HMCS GRU (EG 6 – Escort Group) and about 20 other ships doing A/D sweeps.

Late that night the Goderich rammed the Napanee putting a small hole in the port side, which was later repaired 

In June 1945 I volunteered for the South Pacific area and while home on leave the Atom Bomb was dropped An the war was over.”
