The son of Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Legate of 116 Ursaline Avenue, Chatham, ON. The brother of Helen and William RCAF. Before the war Myles was a commercial pilot and owned his own plane.
In December of 1942 Myles was stationed at St. John, PQ. CDN 29/12/42
Canadian Officers Training Corps.
Served in Canada three and a half years. Transferred to the American Air Force and trained in Florida for two months. Spent thirteen months in India and China and six weeks in Calcutta. Was awarded the Air Medal on completion of one hundred and fifty hours of operational flight in Transport aircraft over the dangerous and difficult India-China air routes (The Jump, and the Presidential Citation. Promoted to the rank of Lieutenant.
The CDN 10/04/1942 reported that Sergeant-Pilot Legate who suffered injuries to his eye and ankle the result of making a ‘forced landing’ in a rough field in February in a flying accident near Hamilton, ON. had been spending the past few weeks at his parents home. He would be returning to the Hamilton General Hospital where he would undergo further treatment.

Discharged January 7th, 1946.
The CDN 23/09/44 reported that FO. and Mrs. Myles Legate along with their daughter Myla Anne were spending a weekend with his parents. Ay the time FO. Legate was attached to the USAAF, his wife and daughter were on their way to Memphis, Tenn. where Ethel Legate was stationed with the US Air Transport Command.
Awarded the Air Force Medal by Gen. William H. Tirner, General of the India Division – Air Transport Command.
The Air Force Medal is awarded to non-commissioned officers and men for an act or acts of valour, courage or devotion to duty performed whilst flying, though not in active operations against the enemy.
2nd Lieutenant Legate’s AFM read:
“Flying at night at high altitudes over impassable, mountainous terrain through areas characterized by extremely treacherous weather conditions necessitating long periods of of operation on instruments … requiring, courageous and superior performance of duties to overcome, he accomplished his mission with distinction.”
The award was made for the period of 20 December 1944 thru 12 March 1945. The award was made upon completion of 150 hours operational flight in transport aircraft.
