Howard enlisted in December of 1939 in London, ON. He trained at Camp Borden and Halifax before being posted ‘overseas’ to Newfoundland and Labrador and Iceland. He went to England and in April of 1944.

The CDN 18/06/45 reported that Howard was in Holland as part of the ‘Army of Occupation’. In a letter to his parents, the first since September of 1944, he let then know that he had been wounded in the right leg on the 4th  of October, 1944and had been confined in hospital for three months. He had seen service in France, Belgium and Germany.
