R. #1 Eberts, ON. with his wife Sarah A., A farmer. Served in the 24th Kent, Regt. for six years.  Attestation: 15/04/1916 at Chatham, ON. to 186th Bn., O/S – CEF. (Att. May have been 22/04/16).   

Age: 40 yrs. 9 Mths., Height: 5’ 8” ¼ “, Girth: 38”, Complexion: Ruddy, Eyes: Grey/Brown. Hair: Black, Weight: 155 #. Medical Exam: at Chatham, 15/04/16. As “Fit” 15/04/16. Sarah moved from the farm to Chatham, ON. living at 188 Selkirk St., Chatham, ON. 

Departed Halifax aboard S.S. Lapland for England, arrived Liverpool 7/04/17. Date of Service 5/06/17 in France. 7/04/17 Transferred to 4th Cdn reserve at Bramshott. SOS to 18th Bn. France 6/06/17, 7/06/17 to 4Cdn Res. Depot Etaples 18th Bn. 16/06/17 18th in Field.

Private Lane trained with the 186th battalion in London, Camp Borden and Chatham, going overseas Mar. 26, 1917.  After training at Bramshott he proceeded to France June 5 attached to the 18th battalion.

He was fatally wounded while serving as sniper Aug. 21, 1917 and died at the Clearing Station the same day.

“Reported – Dangerously  wounded by enemy shell bursting on road – 22/08/17 ‘. Taken to No. 23 Cas. Clg. Station 22/08/17, with a GSW to the head DOW at No.23 C.C.S. – Buried in Cemetery at: D. 14. 3. 8/6, Sheet 36B at Lapugnoy, Marles-Les-Mines, Pas de Calais.

Pte. Lane’s widow had applied for a “War Service to Dependents Soldiers”. To Mrs. Sarah J. Lane of Eberts Post Office a cheque for $100.00 ($180.00 was the max.).

The CVWM has his age as 41 years. Has two interesting photo of Pte. Lane.
