Born 22/01/1915. Of 61 Baxter St., Chatham, ON. The son of Mr. Ellis and Agnes Land of Baxter St. He was married with three children residing at her in-law’s home.

William  enlisted in August of 1940 with the First Kents as a Corporal.  Transferred to #2 C.I.R.U. and served overseas.  It was reported that he was serving overseas in November of 1944. CDN 7/11/44(P). In a letter to his wife he says that the English people are very hospitable to the Canadian troops. The citizens have “rosy cheeks and are well fed. The only shortage of food that he has heard of consists of candy and fruit.” He has met many of the ‘Chatham boys’ while in England. CDN 9/11/44

Arrived home 11 Sep. 1945. CDN11/09/45(P). Reported  being welcomed back to Chatham from overseas duty by Aldermen George Kerr KC., A. G. Goodman and Bert Joyce also by Rehabilitation Officer William Foreman and Alex Copeland for the Civil Reception Committee along with hundreds of citizens. CDN 12/09/45.
