The son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Knight of 117 Colborne St. Chatham, ON. The husband of Margaret “Louise” (nee Martinson), father of Bob, Pat (Solway), Tom, Bev, Karen (Orange), Fred, John and Shawn. The family home was at 95 Wood Street, Chatham prior to his enlistment. He had been working at the Glass House in Wallaceburg and in construction. He was also a member of the Holy Name Society at Blessed Sacrament Church in Chatham.
Pte. Knight was 20 years old when he enlisted in the fall of 1940. He went overseas five months after his enlistment in 1941 with the Essex Scottish serving with that unit in Europe.
Went overseas in 1942 and served on the Western Front. Was wounded the first time with shrapnel which penetrated his back there a month later was seriously wounded in both thighs and right arm.
The CDN 9/08/44 reported that his family had received a telegram from the Director of Records confirming that Wilfred had been wounded in action 3 August of 1944 by shrapnel in his back and had only rejoined his unit in February of 1944.
The CDN 27/02/45 reported that Mr. and Mrs. Knight had receive information that their son had been wounded a second time on the Western Front. After two weeks the parents had not received any information on his condition.
The CDN 3/03/45(P) reported that Wilfred had been wounded in action for the second time. His second wounding resulted in injury both thighs and his left arm.
Wilfred passed away in 1979.
