Pte. John R. Kinniburgh went overseas April 21st, 1916, and crossed to France July 17th, but failing to pass the medical examination, was given Base duty, and two weeks later to Canadian Corps, Headquarters, Belgium. Later he was attached to the Canadian Corps Troops, Supply Column, loading and later issuing rations. In April 1917 he was marked fit for general service, and joined the 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles. May 6th, in the vicinity of Vimy Ridge he sustained a compound fracture of the right forearm the result of shrapnel, which caused the loss of the use of the right hand. He was admitted to Hospital in France, Scotland and England, and invalided to Canada February 4th, 1918. He received treatment at the London Military Hospital.
