Unit # No.1 Canadian Provost

Formerly a Corporal with the RCMP detachment in Wallaceburg he was residing in Port Lambton and Wallaceburg where he was very popular for a number of years before the outbreak of war.

He reported for duty with No.1 Provost Co., 1st Division C.A.S.F. in October of 1939. CDN 20/10/39. Alfred went overseas with that unit spending some time in England before joining the 1stCanadian Division going to North Africa. From there he would see action in and saw action in North Africa, Sicily and Italy as part of the British 8th Army.

The CDN July 1944 reported that he had been severely wounded in August. In a letter to Hugh McPhail, a friend he admitted he was in a hospital receiving treatment for concussion. Half of his face is paralyzed as a result of the wound, according to the letter. 

In a letter to a friend, Alfred gave some indication of the seriousness of his injuries, he was hospitalized receiving treatment for a concussion leaving half of his face paralyzed as a result of his wound. WN 3/08/44. Another article in the WN indicated that he had improved and hopes to be in his hometown soon.
