Born in Brampton, ON. the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred J. and Mary (nee Smith) Kemsley of 23 Gladstone Ave., Chatham, ON. The husband of Joan (nee Dennis), the father of Roger and Tom. The brother of Lieut. Sidney Alexander Kemsley.
His original enlistment was with the Kent Regt., Pte. A470445. Appears on the “Muster Roll” of the 2nd Bn., Kent Regiment (MG), N.P.A.N. (date unknown).
Trained with the 2nd Kents.
Alfred had elected to transfer to the RCAF in August of 1941. CDN 25/08/41. Alfred was on a fourteen day leave from his training at RCAF St.Thomas, unfortunately he came down with influenza while at home. CDN 17/02/42 It was reported that Alfred was at his parent’s home on a fourteen day leave from Dartmouth, NS. CDN 4/09/42
Trained and served in Canada for eighteen months, then went overseas and was stationed for nearly three years at Peterborough, England. Promoted to the rank of L.A.C.
The CDN 17/06/43 reported that LAC Kemsley had completed his training at St. Thomas, Dartmouth, and Penfield Ridge. He was reported as arriving overseas, confirmed by cable to his parents.
Returned from overseas aboard the “Empress of Scotland” and was expected to be in Chatham on the 25th of November, 1945. CDN 25/11/45(P). The CDN reported that Alfred was expected to arrive in Chatham on the evening of 29/11/45. He served in England for five years.
Discharged December 10th, 1945.
After the war ‘Alf’ and Joan opened “Rosery Florist Ltd. in Chatham, ON which they operated from 1945 to 1981.
Alf passed away 27 September, 2016 at the age of 95 years. Interment at Maple Leaf Cemetery, Chatham, ON.
