From Ridgetown, Kent Co., The son of John M and Mary C. Jones of Ridgetown, ON Canada. KIA. 13/05/44, age 19 years. Born in Port Credit, ON. he came to Ridgetown with his parents when he was two years old. James attended public and high school in Ridgetown where he was a successful athlete and was awarded a medal for saving a person from drowning.
James enlisted at 17 ½ years old when he graduated in September of 1942. He trained in Edmonton, AB., Trenton, ON. and received his wings at McDonald, MN. He arrived in England in December of 1943. His father Jack Jones was stationed at No. 10 Canadian General Hospital, he was serving with the RCAMC.
Canadian crew members, Sergeant James H. Jones, Sergeant Kenneth W. Drumm, and Flying Officer Robert J. Fitzpatrick, of the 426 Squadron Halifax Bomber No. 883 “OE-E” shot down on 13 May 1944 by a German Messerschmitt over Londerzeel, Belgium are commemorated on a plaque located on the wall of the town church.
Date of Death: 13/05/1944, in Halifax bomber # LK 883 on Air Ops. Over Beldium, Germany. Shot down by German night-fighter on night operation to Louvain, Belgium. Four of the crew including P/O Jones were killed, F/O J. H. Black taken as POW, F/O’s Doubt and Van Marion plus one RAF crew were Evaders.
Buried in Belgium at the Brussels Town Cemetery.
