Born in Port Alma, Kent Co., ON 16/12/1924 the son of Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Jones. He attended Port Alma Public School, Merlin High School and Chatham Vocational School.

He enlisted in the Navy on 5/08/1943 at HMCS Hunter in Windsor, ON. In November of 1943 he transferred to HMCS York, ‘transferring to Tivals, Algeria minesweeper” then to HMCS Bytown for eight weeks before returning to HMCS Cornwallis.

The Merlin Standard 6/071944, reported that AB. Gillespie then serving on the East Coast, was on a furlough to visit his parents.

In February of 1945 he was transferred to HMCS Avalon and later to HMCS Hallowell on the Newfoundland / Lononderry convoy run. Returning to Cornwallis and then to HMCS Hunter Gerald was discharge from the Navy 23/02/1945.
