Private Lloyd Johnston was promoted to Corporal shortly after enlistment and later Sergeant, going overseas with the 19th Battalion in May 1915. After about four months training in England he crossed to France, remaining until the end of the year, when he returned to England and received a commission with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, being appointed Battalion Musketry Officer. In the autumn of 1917 he was promoted to Headquarters 225th Infantry Brigade as Brigade Musketry Officer with the rank of Captain. After his return to England he took courses in musketry, field firing and rangefinding, and also the Hotchkiss Gun course, in each case obtaining the highest certificates. He reverted to Lieut to return to France Feb 1918 and remained there until he returned to England Dec 27th 1919.

Discharged April 3rd 1919 due to demobilisation.
