Born and raised in Chatham, ON. The son of Mr. and Mrs. C. T. Jewiss. DOB: 2/11/1896 A British Home Child, Born at St. Catherines.  Who was sent to Canada at the age of 10 years and worked as a domestic for a minister and his wife at Niagara-on-the-Lake. Next-of-Kin. To C. G. Jewiss of 257 Raleigh St., Chatham, ON. (father) Liveryman. Single (later married to Bev). A  Liveryman. Vaccinated- Yes.

Was reported on ‘Active Service’, with the local Militia – 24th Kent Regt. Attestation: 22/11/15. Over seas with the 91st Bn. CEF 

Debarked England – to Liverpool Arrival 7/04/17. TOS Segregation Camp – Bramshott. 7/04/17. Influenza. Desp. 29/10/17 1/12/17 – with 18th Bn. In Field – 23/11/17 – 19/10/17.    

Age 19 years at enlistment. Height: 5’ 4” , Girth: 34 ½ “, Complexion: Fair, Eyes: Blue, Hair: Sandy Brown. Medical 16/11/15 at Chatham, ON. 22/11/15 – 26/10/18.

Pte. Alfred H. Jewiss transferred from the 91st to the 186th Battalion, going overseas with this unit in March, 1917, transferring to the 18th Battalion. He received a slight shell shock from shell fire Sept 1918 at Etaples, he returned to England with his Batt at the end of March 1919 and to Canada in May.

Transf. 91st Batt to 186th Bn. From Halifax – per  S. S. Lapland 28/03/17. With 91st Bn. 1915 22/11/15 to 22/11/16. 18th Bn. date of service: 6/09/17.  Disc to Base 14/09/17. No. 2 Conv Dps. – Rouen 18/10/18 

Adm – 26/10/18 Conv. Dep., – Rouen.  October 18th 1918 – Wounded in hand. 10/09/17 No. 7 Can. G. – Etaples :Influenza. Acc. Wd. Left Hand – Disc to reinforcement 6/11/18.    

Appointed Lance Corporal vice 654326 L/Cpl. W. J Westlake – Promoted in Field.

4 Arv. 1919 – Proceeded to England. Sailed S. S. Cabonia – Sailing Liverpool 14/05/19. Service England and France (18th). Alfred was strong , beat the Influenza 1917 with  no bad effects. Wounded GSW to his thumb 1919  and Dipluthuria – Childhood. It was noted the Alfred was “Slightly knocked”.      

Victoria had married during the Great War but he died in 1919, likely of Spanish flu.

They had four children, Allan and Lawrence, both died as infants, Edmond who was killed in WWII and Victor. They always resided in Chatham.

After the war Alfred was Batman for Col. George Kerr (Judge Advocate) Kent Regt.

Alfred died at the age of 53 years.

Demob: 18th Bn. 24/05/1919 at London, ON.  Discharged at London May 24th 1919 due to demobilization.
