Elmer enlisted at HMCS Hunter, Windsor, ON. in 1939 and was sent to Halifax. In November of 1939 on route to England, while sailing south of Iceland his ship was torpedoed and sank. Elmer spent four hours before being rescued. He was then assigned to the Royal Navy and spent the greater part of the war in the Mediteranian theatre of war.
His ship was the first to arrive at Malta bringing supplies to the starving people on Malta. From there Elmer was assigned to a Royal Navy minesweeper and he served there until 1944 when he was returned to the RCN.
