Resident Chatham

Son of William Alexander A50444 and Elizabeth Hurrell; husband of Grace Olive Hurrell, of 154 Murray St., Chatham, Ontario, married in 1941, they had a son ‘Billy’ who was 11 months old in February of 1944.

Norman attended McKeough Public School and Chatham Collegiate Institute where he was an outstanding track athlete. Prior to his enlistment he was employed at the International Harvester Co., in Chatham.

Norman enlisted with his father William A. in the First Kents and until the Kents moved to Halifax, where his father was given an honourable discharge due to his age. Norman was a stretch bearer while in the Kents.

Pte. Hurrell of the Kent Regt. (Active) of the Medical Section was spending a few days furlough the Mrs. N. Hurrell on Murray St., Chatham. CDN 1/03/43.

He transferred for overseas service and was attached to the Perth Regt. when he reached England. He then transferred to a Bren gun unit and fought with them in Italy until January of 1940 when he transferred to be a stretcher bearer, he was serving with that unit when he was reported “missing”.

Although the CDN article of 18/02/44 reported his missing his wife had known since 17 January but for reasons unknown was “directed to withhold the news”.

Age: 25, KIA – Date of Death: 17/01/1944, in Italy.
