He enlisted 10/08/1940 in Chatham, ON. to the Kent Regt. Prior to his enlistment he had been working as a stock keeper.

James married Dorothy 29/04/43 and she was living at 132 William St. North, Chatham, ON. The CDN 23/12/44 reported that Jim was on leave from London, ON. to spend the Christmas week-end with Dorothy and their daughter Barbara at the home on Park Street.

Trained at Chatham and London. Was on Guard Duty in Halifax, Niagara Falls, New Westminster, Terrace, B.C.  and Vancouver Islands. Promoted from Private to the rank of C.Q.M.S. and was awarded the C.V.S.M.

Discharged December 15th, 1945.
