Gunner Hubert G. Hughes trained two weeks at Halifax on the H.M.S. Niobe, and overseas at Devenport Royal Navy Barracks, he took a course at the Gun School, was drafted on a trawler for channel duty, and later transferred to the Royal Naval Barracks, Portsmouth, where he took a second course. He then trained at Haslem Camp, was drafted to the H.M.S. Lillium as gunner with Peterhead, Scotland as headquarters.
