The son of John and Molly Howard of 90 Murray St., Chatnam, ON. He attended Chatham Vocational School. Prior to his enlistment he was employed by J. Terry and Son. The brother of Jack Ordinary seaman in the RCNVR, and brother Reginald, an instructor at Long Branch.
Ernest enlisted in June of 1941 at HMCS Hunter in Windsor, ON. and had been stationed at Halifax, NS. since September of 1941. He had attained 99 marks at his examinations which qualified him for promotion and transfer to the RN. He was sent overseas in January 1942 and was assigned to HMS Duke of York. He served for seven months on the Murmansk Run and then in the Mediterranean theatre of was on convoy duty
Ernest, it was reported in the CDN 30/01/42 was one of seventy three RCNVR enlistments 16 June, 1941. He was selected to go to England to join the Royal Navy.The Chatham sailor observed his 21st birthday as he crossed the Atlantic on his way to England. The CDN 6/04/43 reported Ernie had served two years with the Royal Navy. He had just finished his Leading Stocker’s course in Chatham, England. He was not allowed to “put up his hook until 16 June when he will have served in the RN for two years. In his two years in the RN serving aboard the HMS Duke of York chasing the German pocket battleship “Tirpitz” was very exciting. Or the covering of British forces landing at Oran and Algers.
