Sailed from Halifax, NS 31/05/16 and disembarked at Liverpool.Arv. In England aboard the S.S. Olympic 8/06/16. Transferred from the to the 35th to the 19th Bn. Transferred to the 19th Bn. – Arrived “In the Field 14/08/16. 27/07/16.  Walter was TOS 8/7/16, 35th Bn. TOS 35 Bn. TOS 14/08/16. 11/09/16 TOS to and was KIA. 

There was some confusion as to his date of death 17/09/16 or 21/09/16 even 11/09/16 which was in fact the correct DOD.

Date of Service: 6/08/16. Upon his death his parents were given the Memorial Cross for his mother and the Memorial Plaque 3/03/31 and the Memorial Scroll.

The map co-ordinated from the Ref. map was 57.9, 1/40 000 K 11.2.22. “Pte Holmes was 22yrs. of age. He entered in the 99th Essex Bn. in March of 1916 and Crossed the ocean in the month of May. He was transferred to the 35th Bn. and was KIA on the Sommefront on September 11/19/16. From unidentified news paper article. He left a mother, three brothers and four sisters were left to mourn the loss of a dutiful son and loving brother”.
