Son of Sanitary Inspector and Mrs. David Homes, Lansdowne, who had been on account of a throat trouble. He had been in England for the past 16 months after being currently acting as a machine gun instructor at a training camp in England. He had been in England for the past 16 months after being wounded.   

Corporal Samuel David Holmes trained two years with the 24th Kent Regiment, Chatham, ON.

Corporal Samuel David Holmes left for overseas June 7th, 1915, proceeding to France September 10th, 1915. He received shrapnel wounds December 5th, 1915, and was admitted to hospital in England. Upon recovery, he served at Shorncliffe with the Military Police. He returned to France in 1916, transferring to the Machine Gun Squadron where he served as Instructor, also a Sniper and Instructor in Horsemanship.

He was gassed causing lung trouble and after treatment was sent to Canadian Discharge Depot, January 6th, 1918, arriving in Canada February 13th, 1918, with continued treatment at the Guelph Freeport Sanitarium.

Corporal Samuel David Holmes received his honourable from London, Ontario, July 27th, 1918, being medically unfit for further service due to lung trouble caused from gas.
