Private Hubert J Holloway joined the Royal Navy March 27th, 1885, serving in various parts of the world until April 6th,1903, when he left active service and joined the Royal Fleet Reserve July 1903, serving until August 24th, 1909.
Private Hubert J Holloway trained with the 186th Battalion until March 7th, 1917, when he transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy as Chief Gunnery Instructor and served in H.M.C.S. Niobe at Halifax, N.S.. He was present at the Great Explosion December 6th 1917 and took part in the rescue work there. In 1918 when the German Submarines became troublesome off the Nova Scotian coast he was transferred to the H.M.C.S. Shearwater to search for and destroy them, after which he went to the Gulf of Mexico to look for submarine bases.
After the Armistice he was employed training boys for the Canadian Navy and took two cruises to the West Indies and while there was Captain of the Shearwater’s shooting team, winning 97% of all matches shot against all comers. C.P.O. Holloway was a well known shot both with rifle and revolver while in the Imperial Navy winning the Bisley Revolver Gold Medal in 1900.
Discharged July 22nd 1919 due to demobilisation.
