Captain E. C . Hodgins received his majority June 1916, going overseas with this unit the latter part of March 1917. As the Battalion was broken up in England, Major Hodgins endeavored several times to revert to the rank of Lieutenant, but this was not allowed. Consequently he joined the Imperial Forces, proceeding to France 29th, 1917. He was then posted Headquarters 3rd Army B.E.F. at Albert, Somme, France. Transferred in November 1917 to the 47th Division B.E.F. (London Territorials) and served with them through the attack Cambrai and through the winter of 1917-1918.

Slightly wounded at Bus during the retreat of  British Army in March 1918 he transferred to Headquarters 4th Army B.E.F.. Then was appointed the Town Major of Amiens and remained there throughout the bombardment of that city until December 1918, then transferred to the 10th Army Corps B.E.F. as administrative commandant of Corps Areas with Headquarters at Adenne,, Belgium.

After being transferred to Cavalry Corps as administrative Commandant Cavalry Corps Areas on January 19th, 1919, with Headquarters at Spa, Belgium, but a few days later was evacuated to the 61st Casualty Clearing Station, dangerously ill with pneumonia, and evacuated to Base Hospital in March 1919, and then to Convalescent Hospital in England.

Discharged from Hospital in April 1919, and ceased to be seconded to the War Office on rejoining 4th Reserve Batt. at Ripon, Yorks, transferred to Canadian Corps Concentration Camp, Whitley Camp, Surrey, May 1919.

Returned to Canada June 1919 and discharged from active service and posted to Reserve of Officers, June 23rd, 1919.
