The son of Mr. and Mrs. James Hewson of Camden Township. He was a member of the first group of RCAF men to go through the BCATP, training at Rivers MN., Malton and Jarvis. He went overseas in December 1940 where he was posted for training and then operational service with the RAF.

He was also a member of a crew that ferried a bomber to Egypt and then to Malta. He returned to England in September 1942 and arrived back in Canada in December of 1942 he was reported to be the first Kent County airman to see service overseas after seeing operational service in England. The CDN 25/10/43 reported that James F. Hewson had received his commission in a release from RCAF Headquarters,
