Clarence is the only son of Edward Allen Hatch and Edith Caroline Spencer. His father owned the Hatch Dairy, Park Ave. East, Chatham ON between 1914 & 1942 – Clarence S., C.E.F. , Jan. 12, 1899 – Oct. 11, 1918 is included on the Hatch Family Monument in Maple Leaf Cemetery, Chatham. Sapper Hatch trained with the Chatham Collegiate Cadets.
He left London for overseas June 14, 1918, was detained at Halifax for about two weeks, arriving in England July 25.
He was stationed at Seaford, training until Oct. 7, when he was reported dangerously ill with Spanish Influenza in Eastbourne Hospital where he died Oct. 11.
He was buried at Seaford Military Cemetery.
